What to bring

Commercial:

Commercial headshots are designed to appeal to the advertising industry. The purpose of a commercial is to promote a product to a specific demographic. In your commercial headshot, you really want to consider what demographic you fall into. It is important for the personality types in commercials to be easily identifiable since there are only a few seconds to connect with the viewer. As always, you want to show unique qualities in your headshot. But keep in mind, commercial headshots are really about that broader appeal.  For these, I recommend primary colors. The simpler the better! Even a well fitting tee-shirt will work. The most important thing is to keep the outfit simple. Think Old Navy or Kohls ad. Avoid white or black and any patterns. I've attached a pallet of colors I recommend for clothing.

Theatrical:

Theatrical headshots are geared towards being cast in plays, TV shows, and films. In theatrical headshots, you really want to see the layers of a person’s personality. Generally speaking, theatrical headshots show a little more emotional depth than a commercial headshot. In commercial headshots, it is important to come across as trustworthy so you can sell a product. In theatrical headshots, you are selling an identifiable personality type, whether it’s a trustworthy one or not. I always like layers and slightly darker colors for these. A jean jacket over a teeshirt is great, for example.

In terms of make-up, we'll want the most natural touch possible. That being said, a little concealer under the eyes and powder is mostly what's recommended. I'd bring powder if you have any. I can do a lot in photoshop that substitutes makeup. That being said, I would recommend hydrating the night before! Chapped lips are almost impossible to smooth! I do have a makeup artist I recommend if you are interested in having a professional touch.

I highly recommend pinterest to find good "looks," it's a pretty amazing resource.

The most important thing I can stress about headshots is the photo is about YOU, not about what you’re wearing. The clothes are meant to complement your natural look, and keep you the focus of the headshots. That being said, keep the outfits simple. We don’t want to distract casting directors from what you look like. Keep the wardrobe simple!
